Stillness, isolation and a continuity with the natural qualities of the site were required. The house was to enable a very relaxed private lifestyle and could therefore avoid excessive formality. It needed to be comfortable and spacious but to have the qualities of intimacy and relationship to landscape associated with a garden pavilion. Sustainability and thermal performance in all seasons was considered essential.
Conceptually, the house is composed of a pure square flat concrete roof with a central courtyard opening, supported on a number of protruding masses separated by large areas of glazing. The protruding walls and masses extend the house into its surroundings.
